Václav Havel, the
president of the Czech Republic has been diagnosed with lung cancer.
During a three and half hour surgery, which was performed under a special
security conditions, a team of surgeons removed one half of Havel’s right lung
together with a small carcinom. Since it was found in an early stage, the
prognosis seems to be good.
As anounced by a Czech
daily Mladá Fronta, Havel’s surgery raised questions about the level of
medical charges in the Czech Republic. Dr. Pavel Pafko, the head of the team of
surgeons which performed the surgery, informed that the hospital will receive
for Havel’s surgery from General Health Insurence Company 2.200 Czech crowns
(approx. 80 US $). A repair shop charges for one hour of work on president’s
car 1.400 Czech crowns (approx. 50 US $).
